Finding a faithful church matters because Christ loves His church and builds His people through the faithful teaching of His Word. This guide is designed to help you identify biblical marks of a healthy church, ask better questions when visiting a church, and recognize patterns that can weaken a church’s commitment to Christ, Scripture, and the gospel.
In short, look for a church where Scripture governs, Christ is central, the gospel is clear, leaders shepherd faithfully, and believers are equipped to grow and serve.
You do not need to evaluate every church perfectly after one visit. Use this guide to slow down, observe carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and compare what you see with Scripture.
When Christ said, "I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18), He identified Himself as the builder, owner, and Lord of the church. The church does not belong to human ambition, cultural trends, marketing strategy, or personal preference. It belongs to Christ.
The church, which Christ is actively building through the power of His Word, holds a unique and eternal significance. Church leaders must therefore resist the temptation to invent or market a better way to build the church than the way given by its Chief Architect. Every ministry method must remain submitted to His Word and purpose.
The biblical picture of the church is not a business competing for market share; it is a body (Romans 12:3-8). The church operates through the use of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:27) and fulfills its responsibilities to the fellowship of believers (Acts 2:42).
A faithful church is not perfect, but it should be clearly submitted to Christ, governed by Scripture, centered on the gospel, and committed to making disciples. We have found the following eleven criteria, summarized by Pastor and Bible Teacher John C. MacArthur, to be a helpful guide.
